The Lehigh men’s soccer team defeated the University of Rhode Island 1-0 in Kingston, Rhode Island, on Friday night in a back-and-forth battle for control.

The team’s goal came from first-year forward Doyle Tuvesson on an open net with the far side cross assist from junior forward Austin Decker. The goal was scored at the 10:45 minute mark when Decker crossed the ball to Tuvesson, who headed the ball into the open net.

By the end of the game, all shots were tied between the Rams and Mountain Hawks at 13. A key moment in the game was when senior goalkeeper Ciaran Nugent saved an impending penalty kick, which junior midfielder Brian Vail quickly cleared, to keep the Rams scoreless.

Vail had prevented two other potential goals, not including his, clear off the penalty kick stop by Nugent. Nugent’s big save came at the 60:50 minute mark, stopping Rams player Matt Sykes’ penalty kick.

This save was made under tremendous pressure by the Rams on the Mountain Hawks during the second half, and it may have changed the tide of the half.

“We weren’t terribly pleased with our second-half performance, but when you’re on the road, you have to be happy to come up with a win,” head coach Dean Koski said. “Last year, we didn’t get these games. This year, we’re getting some of those and that’s important.”

The Mountain Hawks travel back to Rhode Island on Sunday to face off against the Bears of Brown University in Providence. They hope to carry momentum from Friday’s win into Sunday to bring back another victory against another strong opponent. The game’s opening kick off is set for 1 p.m.
