Lehigh’s men’s soccer team fell to the University of Maryland 2-0 Wednesday night in College Park.
With both defenses playing well, neither Maryland nor Lehigh had a shot on goal inside the first twenty minutes. Senior goalkeeper Ciaran Nugent recorded his first save in the 23rd minute with a shot from Maryland senior forward Alex Shinsky. The next shot that was put on goal was by Maryland senior midfielder Mikias Eticha. This shot gave the Terrapins a 1-0 lead in the 33rd minute.
Lehigh began to pick it up in the final few minutes of the first half getting off two shots. The first was by junior forward Jamie Luchini and the second by freshman forward Doyle Tuvesson. The first half ended shortly after with Maryland leading 1-0.
The second half started with Maryland getting three straight corner kicks within the first five minutes, but the Mountain Hawks’ defense held up by stopping all three attempts. Eticha put in what proved to be the game-clinching goal in the 72nd minute on an assist from freshman midfielder George Campbell.
In the closing minutes of the game each team traded shots, including one from sophomore defender Gianfranco Giammatteo and another from Tuvesson. However, none of them got past the Maryland goalkeeper, ending the game at 2-0 Maryland. Lehigh’s Nugent finished the game with two saves.
Lehigh falls to 6-6 on the season, and Maryland wins their third straight, improving their record to 6-5-2.
