Delta Upsilon fraternity placed on disciplinary probation

Update: Delta Upsilon fraternity has been placed on disciplinary probation effective Feb. 12 through May 15, 2018 after a committee found the fraternity responsible for all five violations it was previously charged with, according to the Lehigh Greeks blog.

The fraternity was found responsible for violations of: Respect for others, hazing; respect for community, posted rules and regulations; respect for community, false information; respect for self, unauthorized consumption, distribution or possession; and respect for community, failure to comply.

These sanctions, according to the blog, are lower than the sanctions suggested by the code of conduct for incidents involving hazing. However, the panel said the sanctions imposed provide the chapter the opportunity to take the necessary steps to ensure they will not find themselves in similar situations in the future.

The panel elected not to impose harsher sanctions because of the merits of the fraternity and the willingness of chapter leadership to move forward with an effective action plan, according to the blog.

According to the blog, this status implies that any further violation of the university’s code of conduct may result in dissolution, termination or other authorized sanctions.

The blog stated that DU is required to take a leading and meaningful role in planning and executing the 2017-18 hazing prevention week. The chapter is also expected to work with its national office and the Office of Fraternity and Sorority Affairs to develop a risk management policy based on best practices that is applicable to on and off campus events, to be completed by April 30.

DU is also required to review the incident and the disciplinary process and determine if any members should face internal disciplinary action. The chapter must report on this in writing to Dean Chris Mulvihill by April 15.

Delta Upsilon has been charged with violating the code of conduct related to an incident on Feb. 11, according to the Lehigh Greeks blog.

The chapter is being charged in response to allegations of hazing as defined in the Lehigh University Code of Conduct.

DU is also being charged in response to allegations of violating posted rules and regulations in regards to respect for community. They were also found violating Lehigh University policies, rules or regulations which include residential living policies and policies regarding the use of the university computer network.

The charge also stems from allegations of intentionally furnishing false information to a university official, hearing panel or conduct officer.
