Sigma Chi fraternity placed on disciplinary deferred dissolution

UPDATE on 4/28: Sigma Chi fraternity has been placed on disciplinary deferred dissolution, according to the Lehigh Greeks blog.

This sanction will last from April 27 to Dec. 18. After this, the fraternity will be on disciplinary probation from Dec. 19 until May 18, 2018. The blog stated any additional violations during both of these time periods could result in additional violations, including dissolution of the chapter.

In addition, the fraternity must be alcohol free from April 27 to Dec. 18 except for registered on-campus events. Individual members, even of legal age, cannot have alcohol in their rooms during this time period, and if the fraternity wishes to have alcohol at an on-campus registered event, it must submit a plan on how to bring in and remove the alcohol responsibly.

Finally, the chapter must collaborate with the Office of Fraternity and Sorority Affairs and the Office of Student Conduct and Community Expectations on “implementing the educational programming plan that was presented” and must do so by Sept. 30.

“This is the third significant alcohol violation in one calendar year,” the blog said. “Two of these incidents resulted in students being transported to the hospital for high levels of intoxication. These sanctions are appropriate and considering the incidents, lenient. The panel believe the chapter’s plans for alcohol education is a step in the right direction and that the chapter will be able to make changes in the community.”

Sigma Chi has been charged with multiple violations of the Lehigh Code of Conduct, according to the Lehigh Greeks blog.

The blog states that the fraternity was charged with the same set of violations for two different events, which occurred April 1 and April 9.

“On both occasions, guests of the chapter consumed significant amounts of alcohol distributed by Sigma Chi fraternity,” the blog said. “On April 1, 2017 a student fell down a long set of steps, required transport to St. Luke’s and was placed in ICU. On April 9, 2017 a student was intoxicated and had an interaction with (the Lehigh University Police Department).”

For both incidents, the chapter was charged with violating four areas of the Code of Conduct: respect for self — unauthorized consumption, distribution, or possession of alcohol; respect for community — irresponsible distribution of alcohol; respect for community — encouraging or facilitating others in violating the Code of Conduct; and violation of the Lehigh social policy.

The University cares, individuals choose and alcohol is what it is. I’ll pray on weekends that a Lehigh parent doesn’t get notification that their child no longer lives.
