The men’s soccer team suffered their first Patriot League defeat against Lafayette College on Wednesday by the score of 2-0, bringing them to 2-1 in the league and 6-4 overall.
Lafayette’s first goal came in the sixth minute on a pass from junior forward Greg Biggiani to senior midfielder Ryan Dodds. This followed a Lehigh play in which junior forward Austin Decker dribbled around the defense but narrowly missed the back of the net. For most of the game the ball was in transit, with the Mountain Hawks out-shooting the Leopards 10-9. The first shot on goal came in at the 17-minute mark in the first half.
“Good teams have bad days, and today we had a bad day,” coach Dean Koski told Lehigh Sports, who was disappointed in the offensive shutout.
The first half saw two yellow cards against the Mountain Hawks. Tension rose further as Lafayette head coach Dennis Bohn received a red card and an eviction from the game in the first half. From the bleachers across the field, he was heard using some colorful language. There was also one yellow against the Mountain Hawks in the second half.
Lehigh’s first good scoring opportunity happened in the second half. A free kick from junior forward/midfielder Jamie Luchini allowed senior midfielder/defender Ali Famili to get a head on the ball. But the ball went directly into the hands of Lafayette senior goalie Sandy Leavy.
The Leopards’ second goal occurred several minutes later. Junior defender Eric West connected on a free kick from freshman midfielder Daniel Feldman, giving Lafayette the final score of the game of 2-0.
This upset came after a win over American University.
“You can’t let your highs get too high and your lows get too low,” Koski said.
Koski just hopes the team can let this one go and focus on the game ahead. He cited lack of discipline as the main reason the Hawks fell to the Leopards. He said the team will examine its tactics and strategies in preparation for Saturday’s home match against Boston University.
Saturday’s game is scheduled to start at 7 p.m. at the Ulrich Sports Complex on Goodman Campus.
