After previously being suspended from the team after an off-campus incident, three Lehigh men’s lacrosse players are officially re-enrolled in the university and back on the team.
Senior attackman Patrick Corbett, junior defenseman Tripp Telesco and junior midfielder Alex Eaton have returned to school and are back on the team, according to men’s lacrosse head coach Kevin Cassese.
Corbett made his return Feb. 21 in a game against Boston University, scoring a career-high five goals to help lead the team to a 10-9 win. However, neither Telesco nor Eaton were dressed for that game.
After that game, Cassese was unsure about the status of the other two players.
“It hasn’t yet been determined when the other two will be able to return,” Cassese said.
He did confirm that they would return to practice the Monday after the game against Boston. Neither player, however, played in the team’s game against Loyola University (Maryland) on Saturday.
Corbett made his first start in that game since returning to the team, but he was injured early in the first quarter and did not return to the game. He finished the game without scoring a point.
The players had originally been suspended by Cassese after they were an involved in an off-campus incident. According to an article on NBC10.com, the players threw snowballs at a car, which provoked a brawl. During the fight, the man driving the car allegedly had his nose broken. The players were charged with disorderly conduct, public drunkenness and harassment, and Telesco was additionally charged with underage purchase of alcohol and possession of a false identification, according to the article.
As a result of the incident, the suspension of the three players was declared indefinite, but it was lifted after just a few games. As of Feb. 4, it was confirmed by a university official that the players were not enrolled at Lehigh at that time, but the players have now officially returned to the university.
It is unclear why Corbett was allowed to return before the other two players. Cassese gave a statement regarding the current status of the players.
“It is university and Athletics Department policy that we do not discuss details of student conduct matters,” Cassese said in the statement. “I will say that all matters involving any members of our team have been addressed and resolved by the university process and where appropriate, also by our coaching staff. All decisions about the participation of players who are eligible to participate are made by the coaching staff.”
Last season, Corbett played in all 18 games and scored 33 goals and four assists on 82 shots. Eaton also played in all 18 games, scoring 11 goals and nine assists on 42 shots. Telesco started 17 games and recorded 44 ground balls and 36 caused turnovers.
