In the last couple minutes of regulation, Lehigh women’s soccer senior midfielder Madi Morgan took a shot that was saved and sophomore forward Grace Correll put in the rebound, but it was disallowed due to Correll being offsides.

The goal would have been the game-winner, as the Lehigh women’s soccer team battled all the way into double overtime against Colgate University, but the score ended in a 0-0 tie.

Senior forward Emily Korber recognized the team’s strong efforts in regulation.

“We defended strong, despite letting Colgate get some corners in the beginning,” Korber said. “Strong moments were at the end of each half, especially in the second half where we bumped up our momentum.”

Lehigh (4-2-3) had been getting some solid wins so far, but after it tied against College of the Holy Cross last week, they were looking to gain momentum in the Patriot League with a win. Junior defender and team captain Laura Courtney knew this would be a fierce contest.

“A challenge regarding this match is that Colgate is definitely one of the more skilled teams we’ve played, and in Patriot League games anything can happen,” Courtney said.

Shots for each team were tied at 12, and Colgate was led in corner kicks, 7-4.

Colgate dominated the first half of the game, topping Lehigh in shots 7-2. Junior midfielder Madeline Walsh said that the team wanted to make a lasting impact on Colgate, and to show the team’s true ability.

“Our soccer goals were to work on the overlapping passes and little one-two combinations,” Walsh said. “The weak moments in of this game were definitely in the beginning of the first half because I think we had some nerves about what a good team Colgate is. They are usually always ranked and in the Patriot League Championship game.”

The Mountain Hawks came back hungry in the second half, applying the necessary pressure to keep Colgate on its toes. Lehigh overpowered Colgate in shots 8-2 and scored a goal in the last two minutes of regulation that was unfortunately not counted.

Both teams showed equal aggression in the two sessions of overtime, but in the end neither team came out ahead. Lehigh had a chance when sophomore defender Alyssa Riporti took a shot off of a corner kick from freshman midfielder Sabrina Mertz, but it went just high of the net. Walsh admits this was a fair score of the contest.

“This result, while disappointing, is a decent result for this game,” she said. “ We need to continue to look forward because we have some big games coming up. We play Navy on Wednesday and Army West Point next Saturday. We are looking to continue to work on the little things and have a shooter’s mentality.”

With every Patriot League win the team earns three points toward their rankings at the end of the season, so winning from here on out is crucial, according to Korber.

“We are not satisfied with the tie,” she said. “We believe that we are the better team and should have won. Going forward I think we will have a little more confidence up top. We need to find a way to win these games and put the ball in the back of the net.”
