Two males – one Lehigh student and one non-Lehigh student – were verbally and physically harassed by three males near Sayre Park at around 2:09 a.m. Saturday, according to an email from Lehigh University Chief of Police Edward Shupp.

The three males – one Lehigh student and two non-Lehigh students – reportedly approached the other two.

“An anti-gay slur was uttered, a verbal exchange began and the confrontation escalated into a physical altercation,” the email says. “The male Lehigh student who was the victim of the slur was pushed to the ground and suffered a minor head injury.”

The student was transported to St. Luke’s hospital, was treated for the injury and was released.

The LUPD investigated the incident and found the three men who initiated the altercation. They were charged with harassment and ethnic intimidation, which is considered a hate crime.
