Lehigh women’s rowing loses to Delaware, men’s team scrimmages La Salle

The Lehigh rowing team had a scrimmage against La Salle University and the women’s team raced against University of Delaware this past weekend at the Schuylkill River in Philadelphia.

In the scrimmage, both women’s boats, the varsity eight and second varsity eight, came out on top in all the pieces during the scrimmage. The men’s scrimmage was a bit more back and forth.

“I think it was a good learning experience,” said Alex Zulauf of the men’s team. “The point of this kind of thing is we go out with a team we’re going to race later in the season and see what our speed is like next to them. It’s a lot easier than going off raw times we can be right there next to the boat and see how we stack up.”

The women’s races against the Delaware Blue Hens were held after their scrimmage with La Salle and both women’s boats lost to Delaware in the race by no more than 13 seconds.

“In the race we were really tired but we gave it 100 percent,” said Lizzie Litt, sophomore coxswain for the women’s varsity eight.”

In the second varsity eight race, Lehigh pulled a 7:23.46 and Delaware pulled a 7:11.03. As for the varsity eight, Lehigh pulled a 6:55.90 and Delaware pulled a 6:46.78.

“I think it was a great race,” said senior Shannon Dennington of the second varsity eight boat. “We really improved as a boat as a whole and we really moved down the race course confidently.”

Throughout the week the teams said they are going to be working on boat speed and translating that to the courses they will be pulling in two weekends. The second varsity eight boat is going to try to keep their time within 20 seconds of the varsity boat so they can try and keep their boat speed up, even if the course times vary.

The teams will return to racing in two weekends May 13 and will split up when they travel. The women are going to Shrewsbury, Massachusetts, to row in the Patriot League Championships while the men are going to return to Philadelphia and the Schuylkill River to row in the Dad Vail regatta.
