Lehigh struggled against Boston University in its second Patriot League Tournament game, losing 6-2 on Friday morning at Leadership Park.
Not only did the Mountain Hawks (36-15, 1-1 PL Tournament) have a tough time on offense, but their usually reliable pitchers and defense could not stop BU, whose bats allowed them to reach 12 bases in the game.
Freshman Emily Soren started the game, but was pulled after just 1 2/3 innings and was charged with four earned runs. Next, Lehigh called on its top pitcher, junior Christine Campbell, but even she only lasted two innings and gave up two runs on four hits.
For the Terriers (27-22, 2-0 PL Tournament), pitcher Melanie Russell had a much easier game and did not allow a Lehigh player to get on base until she hit senior Jessica Calvini with a pitch in fifth inning. She struck out three batters and though she yielded two runs, the game was far out of reach by the time she did.
The one standout for the Mountain Hawks was junior Vicky Lattanzio, who pitched the last 2 1/3 innings of the game and did not concede a run to BU. Additionally, she sparked the small spurt of offense for Lehigh at the end of the game with an RBI double to center field.
Because of its loss, all future games for Lehigh in the double elimination formatted Patriot League Tournament will be sudden death.
Up next, the Mountain Hawks will face the winner of the game between Bucknell University and Army West Point, which is currently being delayed by rain. The game will resume at 3 p.m. if weather permits.
