Nicolas Sarano, who was arrested last November for slashing Liam Walsh, ’16, with a razor during an altercation, will withdraw from Lehigh for a year and serve five years of probation under a plea bargain, according to court documents.
A verbal exchange took place between the two students around midnight on Nov. 14, 2015, and culminated when Sarano – who allegedly did not know Walsh – attacked the victim with a razor and left him with a five- to six-inch laceration about one inch wide on his right leg.
Following the assault Sarano turned himself in and was arrested by the Bethlehem Police Department, arraigned in Northampton County Prison and charged with simple assault, possession of an instrument of crime with intent, aggravated assault and harassment. Sarano admitted to the former two charges during a sentencing on Aug. 1, and the latter two were withdrawn.
As part of the plea deal, Sarano will withdraw from Lehigh until Walsh graduates in June 2017, according to the documents. During that time, he will not be allowed on campus. In addition, he must have full-time employment or be a full-time student, and he is restricted from consuming alcohol or drugs.
Sarano is due back in criminal court on Sept. 6.
