All spring 2019 Interfraternity Council recruitment activities have been suspended according to an email sent on Dec. 12 by President John Simon, Provost Pat Farrell and Ricardo Hall, the vice provost of student affairs. The suspension comes after the university was made aware of “alleged hazing” by an on-campus fraternity.
The email states all recruitment activities are suspended until the hazing report is fully investigated and/or adjudicated.
“Hazing is not at all in line with Lehigh University’s values or ideals, and has no place in our community as we work together towards an even brighter future,” Simon, Farrell and Hall wrote in the email.
The Timothy J. Piazza Antihazing Law was signed on Oct. 19 by the state of Pennsylvania, according to Penn State News. The email sent out by the university stated that the law applies to all student organizations.
Because of the law, the email states, “all colleges and universities in our state will now post hazing incidents on a publicly accessible website.” The email further states this website is required to be completed by Jan. 15.
Simon, Farrell and Hall wrote in the email that they still want the positive actions by Greek life to be recognized.
“Greek life has a strong history at Lehigh and remains an important part of our future, Simon, Farrell and Hall wrote in the email. “We are confident that our students – including fraternity brothers/sorority sisters, club members, teammates, and friends – are concerned for the well-being of others within our community and will remain vigilant as we work together to end hazing.”

My understanding is that the hazing incident was reported anonymously by a Freshman’s mommy. The complaint was based upon the Freshman receiving “inappropriate” recruitment emails. Does this poor lad attend class in his pajamas with a cup of hot cocoa? No worries about this lad being a “Toxic” male.
