Editor’s Note: This article has been update to reflect a phone call with Lehigh University Chief of Police Jason Schiffer.
At 2:49 p.m., a Hawkwatch Alert was sent out to the Lehigh community notifying that shots were fired by 8th and Atlantic Street around 2:39 p.m. At 3:05 p.m., however, a subsequent Hawkwatch Alert was sent out notifying the Lehigh community that Bethlehem Police Department conducted an investigation and have not been able to find any evidence that substantiates this report of gunshots.
According to the initial alert, two males fired a gun around that area, and possibly ran into a house between 6th and Atlantic Street. The alert also said the location of the shooting is approximately five blocks east of Lehigh’s campus. Both Bethlehem Police and LUPD are closely monitoring the situation to prevent the suspects from entering campus.
According to a phone interview between The Brown and White and Lehigh University Chief of Police Jason Schiffer, the information from the first Hawkwatch Alert came from a call to the Northampton County 911 Center.
Schiffer then said he decided to send out the initial emergency notification due to the severity of the incident and its proximity to campus. After Bethlehem Police Department closed their investigation, the second, updated alert was sent out.
He also said from his experience, unless someone comes forward with additional information or if Bethlehem Police come across additional information, this is probably a closed incident.
