Letter to the editor: Become aware, watch “Before the Flood”

0

In October, a new film titled “Before the Flood” was released. This film was produced by and stars renowned actor, Leonardo DiCaprio. The film focuses on advocating and informing viewers on climate change and the countless examples of the negative impacts this issue has caused throughout the world.

DiCaprio visits places like India, Canada, China and Indonesia in order to get a firsthand look at the effects that the changing climate has had. Some of these effects include extreme deforestation in order to obtain oil from tar sands in Alberta, Canada, destructive flooding in Haryana, India and ice cap melting in the Baffin Islands of the Canadian Arctic.

The impact of climate change is undeniable and the evidence of a warming planet has been proven time and time again. It is time now that people begin to become aware of the true impacts this problem has caused and, in turn, take action against it in order to prevent it from getting any worse and affecting even more people than it already has. One of the greatest challenges involved in climate change is awareness. Too few people understand what climate change is and are aware of the destruction that it can cause if nothing is done to stop it. This film, “Before the Flood,” provides powerful and eye-opening visuals of the negative impacts that climate change is causing. The simple act of watching this movie will help send the message of the importance of this issue in the world today, and help turn our generation in the direction of improving our current environmental situation.
