A solid defensive performance and balanced scoring attack helped the Lehigh men’s basketball team secure a 61-47 victory over Navy on Wednesday night.
Freshman guard Brandon Alston led the way with 14 points on five for eight shooting. He scored 10 of his 14 in the first half and ignited the Lehigh offense with his shooting.
Lehigh was able to break the game open early in the second half thanks to the play of freshman point guard Kahron Ross. Ross struggled in the first half after picking up two early fouls, but his second half play elevated Lehigh. He finished the game with nine points and seven assists, and his play in the open floor during the last 15 minutes of the game made the difference. Ross, after completing some significant passes, was able to turn a close game into a resounding win for Lehigh.
Defensively, Lehigh was very solid, as they held Navy to 38 percent shooting. Lehigh worked to close out to Navy’s shooters and plug driving lanes quickly. The size and athleticism of junior forwards Jesse Chuku and Justin Goldsborough were also factors inside.
Goldsborough and sophomore center Tim Kempton added 10 points each, while junior guard Austin Price chipped in with 11.
The victory brings Lehigh to 3-4 in the Patriot League. Up next for the Mountain Hawks are the Lafayette Leopards, who also sit at 3-4 in the league. The game will be played at Lafayette on Saturday afternoon.
