After finishing third overall in the Patriot League Championship last year, the Lehigh women’s golf team has even higher expectations for the Patriot League Championship golf tournament this weekend in Annapolis, Maryland.
The past two years, the tournament has been played and hosted in Bethlehem, so this year will be a change for the team.
“The Patriot League Championship has six teams participate,” said senior Kelly Moylan. “It takes place over two days. The first day, competitors play two rounds, which usually consists of 36 holes and then the second day consists of 18 holes.”
The two-day tournament will begin Saturday morning at 8:30 a.m. followed by an 8:30 a.m. start on Sunday. All of the rounds are added up, and the team with the lowest score will move on to a higher level NCAA tournament.
The team enters the tournament coming off of a strong showing at the Red Flash Invitational, where it tied for second place in a four-team field. The Mountain Hawks secured some big individual finishes by Moylan and junior Nicole Feierberg, while senior Melanie Dickens tied for 11th place, giving the team some leverage in the scorecard.
Furthermore, heading into the Patriot League Championship, the team is confident that it will perform as expected. The team has momentum coming into the championship this weekend. Recently, it tied for second place at the Red Flash Invitational, right after coming off a disappointing 12th place finish out of 16 teams in the Middleburg Bank Intercollegiate Tournament. Moylan lead the Lehigh women’s golf team, where she shot her third straight round under 80 and was able to tie for 22nd place at a total of 235 shots (79-79-77).
The season has been highlighted by top two finishes throughout the season. The team has had great leadership in its two senior standouts: Dickens and Moylan. The two have been instrumental in leading the team to crucial decisive finishes throughout the season.
“We have been working on developing mental toughness in practice in order to perform under pressure situations in our competitions,” sophomore Elizabeth McGarrigle said. “Also our performance this spring season is an improvement in comparison to last year.”
The Mountain Hawks are seeking to develop their mental toughness in order to enter the Patriot League Championship with some added confidence.
Dickens is one player who is focused on improving for the Patriot League Championship this weekend. The team, as a whole, is concerned with improving.
“There’s still room for improvement and hopefully within the next few days, we will get all the practice we need in order to go in prepared for this tough tournament,” Dickens said.
