Sophomore forward Grace Correll was the hero of the night after scoring the golden goal in the 103rd minute as Lehigh women’s soccer defeated Lafayette College, 1-0, Wednesday in a double overtime thriller.

After a first half where both teams combined for only four shots, both squads came out completely energized in the second half. The momentum began to switch for Lehigh (7-6-3, 2-3-2 Patriot) when it had six corner kicks in a 3:48 minute span. The last of the six ended up as one of Lehigh’s best scoring chances as sophomore defender Alyssa Riporti narrowly missed and sent her shot just wide of the left post.

“We all believed in each other throughout the entire game that a goal was coming, so we just continued to fight until finally we found the back of the net in double OT,” Correll said.

Lehigh continued to create scoring opportunities in the second half, having six other corner kick opportunities and a total of 12 shots.

Lafayette almost gave Lehigh a huge scare near the end of the second half as Lafayette’s forward Kaelin King sent a shot from the right of the box that forced senior goalkeeper Ani Nahapetian to make a great save.

“We are very proud of the effort tonight by our team,” coach Eric Lambinus said. “We were able to dictate the tempo of the second half and created multiple opportunities. It is a credit to their belief and toughness that they didn’t let the missed opportunities to stop them from continuing to put pressure on Lafayette and ultimately score the winning goal in overtime. It was a great ball by Madeline Walsh and great determination and composure by Grace Correll to finish it.”

With the win, Lehigh looks to keep its hopes alive for the postseason. Looking ahead towards its next opponent, Lehigh faces Bucknell University at home on Oct. 24 at 7 p.m.
