Portland Trail Blazers guard C.J. McCollum, ’13, got an opportunity to shine on the big stage after he was invited to be a part of NBA All-Star Weekend, competing in the Skills Challenge and 3-Point Contest Saturday night in Toronto, Canada.
While he didn’t win either of the competitions, it cemented his name alongside some of the best rising and current stars in the league and continued to increase his exposure during his breakout season.
He was one of the eight participants in the Skills Challenge, defeating Los Angeles Lakers guard Jordan Clarkson in the first round. However, he lost the next round to Boston Celtics guard Isaiah Thomas after struggling with both the dribbling and the chest pass, two parts of the Skills Challenge. Minnesota Timberwolves rookie center Karl-Anthony Towns won the event.
Later in the night, he competed in the 3-Point Contest along with seven other players, but scored the second-lowest total of the first round and was eliminated. He scored 14 points, including a longest streak of six shots in a row. Golden State Warriors guard Klay Thompson won the event.
McCollum will have his next game against the Warriors on Feb. 19 at 10 p.m.
