Must-See Mountain Hawk week 4: Brad Mayes

0

This is the fourth edition of what is a weekly installment in The Brown and White sports section. The Must-See Mountain Hawk series gives recognition to one of Lehigh’s top performers.

Lehigh quarterback Brad Mayes is this week’s recipient of the Must-See Mountain Hawk award after he threw for a school record 524 yards to go along with six touchdowns in Lehigh’s 63-35 rout over Yale University.

Mayes’ record-setting performance comes just one week after senior quarterback Nick Shafnisky set a career high with 464 passing yards against Princeton University. With Shafnisky unavailable because of an injury this week, Mayes capitalized on his opportunity to play by entering his name into the Lehigh record books.

Mayes, a sophomore, is no stranger to filling in for Shafnisky as he started two games last fall when Shafnisky went down with an injury. Mayes excelled in those starts as well, throwing for a combined five touchdowns and no interceptions in wins over Georgetown University and Holy Cross. During that span, he garnered Patriot League Rookie of the Week and Patriot League Offensive Player of the Week.

The Tampa, Florida, native led Lehigh to its third straight victory to move to 3-2 on the year. The Mountain Hawks totaled 651 yards of offense against the Bulldogs to go along with their 63 points, the most points Lehigh has scored since 2002. Junior wide receivers Troy Pelletier and Gatlin Casey continued their dominant play this week as well. Pelletier tallied 213 receiving yards with three touchdowns while Casey hauled in two touchdown catches to go along with 169 receiving yards. This marks the second consecutive week where the Mountain Hawks have accumulated more than 600 yards of offense.

The Mountain Hawks have concluded the non-conference portion of their schedule and will return home to open up Patriot League play this week against Colgate University. The game is set to kick off at 12:30 p.m. from Goodman Stadium.
