The Lehigh men’s basketball team nearly pulled through with a comeback against Stony Brook on Tuesday night in Long Island, but fell in the final seconds, 62-57.
With 37 seconds left in the game, Lehigh (3-5) was down 58-57 after a 3-pointer from junior Kahron Ross. With the chance to come back, Austin Price got called for a foul, and Stony Brook made both free throws to take a three-point lead.
With 1.8 seconds left in the game, sophomore guard Kyle Leufroy missed the potential game-tying 3-pointer.
Point guard Kahron Ross and senior forward Tim Kempton led the way for the Mountain Hawks, combining for 12 assists, one steal and 38 points. Ross made two 3-pointers, while Kempton made a career-high 4 of 5, propelling the Mountain Hawks forward throughout the game.
Early in the game, Lehigh went up 5-1. The teams continued to go back and forth, trading points and ending the half 26-25 with Stony Brook in the lead.
The second half was also back and forth, but Stony Brook built up a nine-point lead with 6:40 remaining in regulation. With Lehigh down 58-51 with only 1:23 seconds remaining, Kempton and Ross both made 3-pointers, putting the game within one point with only 37 seconds left. However, as time expired it was Stony Brook who came out with the win.
The Mountain Hawks will return to action Saturday to face off against Mount St. Mary’s in attempt to improve to 4-5 before returning home Monday against St. Francis University.
