Despite almost 200 receiving yards combined from both junior Troy Pelletier and senior Derek Knott, Lehigh was unable to stop the late fourth quarter rally against No. 22/19 Villanova on Saturday, losing 26-21.
Senior quarterback Nick Shafnisky proved his dual-threat ability again Saturday as he tallied another rushing touchdown and 37 yards on top of 246 yards passing. Shafnisky’s first rushing touchdown came last week in the season opener, making it two straight games with at least one rushing touchdown.
The momentum looked to be leaning Lehigh’s way at the beginning of the fourth quarter as an 11-play, 75-yard drive put the Mountain Hawks in the lead with only eight minutes left in the game. Capped off by a quick pass over the middle to Knott for the score, the drive game Lehigh a one-point lead with the game in the balance.
Villanova quickly answered, however, with a nine-play, 83-yard drive of its own while only taking 3:38 off the clock. With four minutes left in the game Lehigh tried to rally once more only to fall inches short as a fourth down completion to Pelletier came up just short of the first down.
Lehigh falls to 0-2 on the season after Saturday and looking ahead gears up for their next game in Philadelphia against Penn.
