Lehigh volleyball comes from behind, wins in fifth set over George Washington

The Lehigh volleyball team won a five set battle against George Washington University on Tuesday night in Grace Hall.

George Washington was looking for the sweep against the Mountain Hawks after it took the first two sets in the match. Lehigh lost a close first set 25-21 and the second set even closer, 25-22.

The Hawks refused to give up and fought their way back to take the last three sets in the match. The third set saw Lehigh take the win by nine points, winning 25-16, and another tight fourth set ended with the team winning by only five. The last set followed the same pattern, with Lehigh narrowly edging out a 15-12 win.

Jessica Donaldson led the way for the team, scoring a game high 22.5 points. The next highest point scorer for Lehigh was Lauren Bright with 16.5 points.

Lehigh led every category against George Washington except for total blocks, taking the advantage in digs, hits and kills.

In the last set, Lehigh was down for almost the entire time. The team began to make its comeback when George Washington was up 8-5. Lehigh tied it up at 11 by a kill from Kelly Bennett and held on to the lead from there. Bennett was also one of the leading point scorers for Lehigh with 10.5.

The Mountain Hawks scored two more quick points, but George Washington kept it close by bringing it to 13-12. Donaldson secured the win for Lehigh by scoring the last two points to end the tough match.

The Mountain Hawks look to take back-to-back wins when they play their next match against Holy Cross on Friday at 7 p.m. in Grace Hall.
