Lehigh wrestling defeated George Mason University 27-9, advancing the Mountain Hawks to the National Duals Championship Finals in Iowa City for the first time since 2005.
With a turnout of over 1,000 people, No. 11 Lehigh, with an overall record of 13-4, won seven of the 10 matches against George Mason (whose duals record is 9-9) Saturday, which took place at the Hawks’ own Leeman-Turner Arena.
Lehigh started off the dual strong with 149 with sophomore Drew Longo beating George Mason’s Blake Roulo 6-4. Although Lehigh started off the match with a win, the Mountain Hawks were unable to keep this winning streak, losing the next two matches.
Junior Mitch Minotti and graduate student Marshall Peppelman were both unable to win their matchups, Minotti falling 4-3 and Peppelman 8-6. George Mason’s Jake Kettler also beat junior Doug Vollaro after a close 3-2 match.
Mountain Hawks’ graduate student Santiago Martinez, senior Nate Brown, junior Elliot Riddick, freshman Scott Parker, senior Mason Beckman and junior Randy Cruz helped lead their team to victory with wins. Martinez won 8-3, Parker won 8-1, Beckman won 13-0 and Cruz won 6-2.
On Feb. 21-22, Lehigh wrestling will travel to Iowa City, Iowa, to compete in the National Duals. Lehigh’s quarterfinals opponent for the National Duals has not yet been announced, but will be determined sometime next week.
