At the start of the season, the Lehigh women’s lacrosse team (8-7, 3-4 Patriot) hit a few rough patches. They started out 2-4, losing to teams such as Penn State University, Fairfield University and Jacksonville University.
However, the team turned it around and now is peaking, junior midfielder Kendall Garden said. The women’s team had two big conference wins against Lafayette College and Bucknell University, beating them 15-6 and 17-4, respectively.
“Those two wins were key Patriot League wins and helped us get the confidence we needed to know we’re fully capable to keep winning,” freshman defender Alexis King said.
Later on, the women’s team held a four-game winning streak, also defeating Mount St. Mary’s University, Bryant University and Rutgers University. That streak eventually ended against Boston University in a very close game as they lost 8-5 at the Ulrich Sports Complex. After the game against Boston, the team also lost to Navy, 8-3.
The team recognizes that it still has some work to do if it wants to make the playoffs.
“(We need to work on) being confident for an entire 60 minutes,” Garden said. “We tend to play down to teams that we know we can beat and come out afraid when playing teams that ranked above us.”
With confidence, Garden said she believes that that the team is capable of beating any team within the Patriot League. Staying disciplined and sticking to the game plan is also crucial to winning games, King said.
“We are trying to keep our energy up and making sure everyone is contributing and doing their part on the team.”
As the regular season comes to a close, the team is looking to keep everyone healthy and rested. Garden said that because the team only consists of 23 players, it’s very important that everyone takes care of themselves properly. They plan on doing this by keeping a healthy diet, getting lots of sleep and going to Sports Medicine regularly.
The team’s most recent win was against American University, 16-6. The team will finish out its season with a road game against College of the Holy Cross on April 17 at 5 p.m.
