Kappa Sigma fraternity placed on disciplinary probation through 2017

Lehigh’s chapter of Kappa Sigma fraternity was placed on disciplinary probation after being charged for three separate instances of disorderly conduct in an off-campus house. Several brothers were cited for incidents that occurred on Nov. 20, Nov. 21 and Dec. 2 of last year.

According to the Lehigh Greeks blog, the chapter pleaded responsible for charges of two incidents breaching Respect for the Law 1 and Respect for Community (General). The members pleaded not responsible for the third incident.

However, upon further consideration of the incident in which 25 members were in a house playing music without sound check and drinking on a weeknight, the University Committee on Discipline also deemed the chapter accountable for the disturbance to the community.

As a result, Kappa Sigma will be placed on probation effective May 31, 2017, through Dec. 31, 2017. The chapter is already set to be on probation from June 1, 2016, to May 31, 2017, for a previous incident of misconduct.

“Disciplinary probation is the conditional continuation of a group or organization for specified period of time not to exceed four semesters,” according to the blog post. “This status implies that any further violation of this code of conduct may result in dissolution, termination or other authorized sanctions.”

An education sanction is also being imposed upon Kappa Sigma, requiring the chapter to meet with an alumnus in order to improve communication with alumni about expectations and responsibilities for their personal conduct during visits to Lehigh. This sanction is to be competed by April 8.

“Extending the probation through the fall of 2017 ensures that the Kappa Sigma chapter will be on probation through the next two Lehigh-Lafayette games,” according to the blog post. “We hope that Kappa Sigma takes the Dec. 2 event as a learning opportunity to be more aware of their impact on the community.”

The fraternity was previously placed on disciplinary deferred dissolution following an incident that included a violent altercation during an event at Asian Bistro.
